Sad Day

well, shit, i guess you can’t always get what you want…this was the first election i really cared about, and really wanted to make a difference, and the other guy just won…i can see why young people get disenfranchised with the whole voting system, its tough to get motivated to go out and vote when nothing you do really determines the outcome of the election…i just hope this nation understands what just happened, how another four years of Bush is going to do nothing but continue to undermine our credibility with the rest of the world, and continue to seed and grow the hatred for our country that is already spreading throughout the globe…but, if they understood that, Bush wouldn’t have won the election anyway…well, forgive them, for they know not what they have done…i need a drink

How can you say that nothing young people do determines the outcome? If Kerry would have won you’d have been all over how the young people can make a difference, so it’s not about not determining the outcome, it’s about not having voted for the winning candidate.

    all i know is:
    a) i voted for kerry
    b) kerry lost
    c) i’m young

my point was, somebody like Kerry and the Democrats went out and attempted to energize the youth into voting, and the election still turned out the same…to a youth that is already disgusted with the American political system, what does this say? to me, it says, don’t vote, cause it really doesn’t matter anyway…

Is MTV the only news organization reporting on young voter turnout this way?

The election didn’t “turn out the same”, since every election is different. The way to change the political system isn’t through apathy, it’s through involvement.

the election “turned out the same” in my eyes…elmo, i think we are discussing a generational gap here, one which we will never see eye to eye on…now, i know with you being a staunch republican, and somebody who always has to have the last word, even if it is a stupid one, will try to reply to this again and bring up another irrelevant point…

I don’t think what I’m saying irrelevant, though, it directly applies to why you don’t think it’s worth voting. Why do you think it’s only worth voting if the results turn out the way you want them to?

The youth vote WAS energized, big time. They turned out in force, tens of thousands more than in 2000, if not more. But just because someone is young doesn’t mean they are automatically democrats. About 44% of 18-29 year olds voted for Bush, so they think it was worth voting.

BTW, I’m not a staunch republican, I’m more of a RINO (Republican In Name Only). For example, I support gay marriage, I don’t think we can ban abortion, and I actually agree with many of the things that Kerry wanted to do, moreso than with what Bush wanted to do. The main reason I supported Bush in this election is because Kerry was a terrible candidate. AnybodyButBush is not a valid reason to support Kerry. If Joe Lieberman would have gotten the dem nomination, I almost certainly would have voted for him on Tuesday. If Joe Biden runs for president, I’ll probably switch party affiliation so I can caucus for him.

I’d hate to not live up to your expectations, so I’ll have the last word with this statement. Basically you’re just bitter that the guy you voted for didn’t win.
